Heritage open days 19 & 20 September 2026

Our public open days were a chance for visitors to see our water wheel turning with our pump as well as the model of the mill in its working days which was on display. Our visitor centre was open, showing finds discovered when digging the site and slideshows of the restoration in the early days.

We had biscuits, home made cakes and sausage rolls, and we made tea and coffee or cold drinks for visitors. We gave out self guided maps so visitors could discover all the features and facilities of the bone mill site.

Our trailer with seats and Ryan’s Land Rover were in use ferrying visitors from the car park to the mill and back, many visitors walked to the mill along the river bank where we had new riverside signs about nature, these include waymarkers so visitors know how much further it is to the mill.

We also put our bridge across so walkers on the Nar Valley Way could join us from the footpath from Narborough, Pentney and Marham, the bridge also allows visitors to see the picturesque view of the mill from across the river.

Folders with research about workers from the bone mill and photos of work carried out at the mill over the years were on our table for visitors to view.

We had a number of people sign up to newsletters on our website after the open days, and we have been given another 5 star Google review. We always enjoy talking to visitors about the work we have done and the story of the bone mill.

Volunteers work at the mill every Thursday when walkers on the Nar Valley Way footpath can cross our bridge and view the site including the visitor centre.
