Recent Finds

In the early days of uncovering the mill site there were lots of finds each week which were listed with photos in the blogs. Later when Barry used to bring his metal detector he discovered lots more finds, the best of which are listed under Major Finds.

In recent times there were far less finds, but they were also included in the blogs over several years. This page gives an overview with links to the majority of the recent finds.

 

14/2/19 Barry found a George III overstamped Penny, Musket balls, Bronze nails, Blazer buttons, Bronze rings and a square sectioned bronze casting.

14/3/19 a large hinge from a door or gate was found. On 28/3/19 Barry found a watch.

10/6/21 Brad found the anchor strap from the stanch when magnet fishing.

14/10/21 the boiling house corner bracket originally found in 2015 was exposed. Traces of the wooden post it held were found as well as the tar floor. A cover was made so the feature can be viewed.

3/3/22 When digging a trench for nest camera cables an iron bar and strip of lead were found, also some large round and square washers and a bone.

When we started earthworks for the wildflower meadow on 11/6/22 we found a large iron hinge post, part of a control wheel, and a nut & bolt. 'Eyes Only' finds were 3 slate ridge caps, a large piece of grindstone and a bone found when digging the trench. Also found were the metal centre of a grinding wheel, sheet of lead and a mixer paddle. A piece of thick curved glass from jars used to store sulphuric acid for making fertilizer was found near the shed. 

17/6/22 illuminated shelves were made to display some of the finds as part of our Green Grant.

21/7/22 Ryan metal detected the Cornfield flower area and discoverednumber of finds which are displayed in the visitor centre. We also found twisted metal which was part of a gate.

3/9/22 A concrete block with girders was re-discovered in the undergrowth, it was originally beside the river near the water wheel, but was moved when restoration work was carried out.

At Heritage Open Days 2022 Ryan had metal detecting demonstrations where visitors were able to use detectors, sheet metal, the top part of a ceramic bottle and a number of other items were found. Following the open days, Kevin who attended, visited again with his metal detector and discovered large nails, square nut, pre 1940s shotgun cartridge, belt buckle and a piece of lead which are displayed in the visitor centre.

29/9/22 when preparing soil for the wildflower meadow, a piece of clinker, 2 bones, drilled metal plate, bolt, and a piece of coated glass from a sulphuric acid bottle were found in the soil.

1/10/22 the old sluice channel from the guillotine lock beside the wheel was discovered after being buried in undergrowth, it was put on display.

13/10/22 some metal parts were found near the container and Anne Marie found some nails while weeding the wildflower area on 2/11/22.

23/2/23 Eddie found a piece of coated glass from a sulphuric acid bottle at the top of the entrance track.

18/3/23 When we cleared debris from the fallen river wall we found a piece of tar floor with a bone in it and a curved strip of metal.

10/6/23 Ryan found a large historic nail when strimming the wildflower area.

15/2/24 Graham found a Nail, nut and chain link near the compost bins.

28/4/24 When planting Oak trees in the wildflower meadow part of a hinge was found.
